What does a Marketing Intern really do

What does a Marketing Intern really do

The internship semester is often a student’s first entry into the professional world. While lectures and assignments provide theoretical knowledge, internships show how those concepts are applied in practice. Here’s what a typical day looks like for a marketing intern specializing in online marketing, from daily tasks to learning experiences.

____________________________________________________________________________________

I’m currently a marketing intern at InterNations, a company that connects expats to local communities abroad. It is a five-month remote internship focused on online marketing—specifically SEO, website updates, research, and content writing.

A typical workday begins with checking emails and Slack to identify priorities. Every morning, we have a brief team check-in with our supervisor to discuss updates and upcoming deadlines. Some Mondays, the entire Marketing department meets to share personal updates and unit progress. Generally, the work moves much faster than university case studies, and I have far more autonomy than anticipated.

Core Tasks & Responsibilities

My primary focus is SEO and website management. Much of my day involves creating and optimizing landing pages, guide pages, and homepages of countries and cities, I ensure content is SEO-friendly and up to date. I regularly update existing site content to improve search rankings and craft meta descriptions that are both keyword-rich and engaging.

Before this internship, I thought SEO was just about keywords, but I’ve learned it’s about understanding user intent and creating genuinely helpful content for expats navigating life abroad, and structuring information for both humans and search engines. Content creation is a central part of the role and requires in-depth research — more than I expected. I conduct competitor analysis, identify content gaps, and monitor trends in the expat community space. My regular task is keyword research and researching topics that are relevant to international professionals, such as relocation advice, cultural insights, or practical living tips. Accuracy, clarity, and accessibility are especially important, as the content is aimed at a global audience with diverse backgrounds. For example, I research keywords like “how to find an apartment in Warsaw”, then create content that addresses the specific needs and questions uncovered in my search. Other days, I analyse page performance, identify improvement opportunities and presenting recommendations for new content topic (if necessary).

I also analyse our target audience: what challenges are expats facing? What information are they seeking? This research informs our content strategy and helps InterNations stay relevant to the community’s evolving needs. By reviewing and updating existing pages, I help maintain consistency and quality across the platform, ensuring users always have access to reliable, current information when searching for guidance on living, moving, or working abroad.

Secondary Tasks

While SEO is my primary focus, I also support social media initiatives. Interns occasionally collaborate with the social media team to support brand visibility across platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. This involves brainstorming ideas and creating short videos for our media platforms. These cross-functional tasks have shown me how content marketing and social media strategy work together.

Another aspect involves supporting the InterNations magazine, which covers practical advice for people living abroad. This work strengthens research and long-form writing skills while offering a different perspective from website-focused tasks.

What I’ve Learned So Far

Feedback is an essential part of the internship experience, whether revising articles, improving SEO, or adjusting content tone, it’s all part of my professional growth. My understanding of marketing has completely changed. University taught us theories and frameworks, but a marketing job is more dynamic. It’s about constant research, writing and adapting to data. Most, importantly, this internship has shown me that I love content creation and strategy, but highly data-driven roles is definitely my path and that’s valuable information for planning my career.

Final Thoughts

The role of a marketing intern at InterNations revolves around online content, research, and digital strategy. For students entering an internship semester, it is important to know that every job and task is not the same despite having the same job title, but what matters is showing up with curiosity and making the most of the opportunity.
